Carl A. (Drew) Brodkin, MD, MPH (Principal Investigator)

Carl A. Brodkin is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Environmental Health. He is also the Associate Director of the Occupational Medicine Residency/Fellowship Program. His research focuses on the hepatotoxic effects of solvents and natural history of asbestos-related lung disease. He is active in providing consultation to the WPC physicians, consultation through the University of Washington's MEDCON, and in teaching.

William O. Robertson, MD (CO-Principal Investigator)

William Robertson is a Professor of Pediatrics and is Medical Director of the Washington Poison Center. He is a nationally recognized expert on childhood poisoning, has authored the sections of poisoning for the "Merck Manual", Cecil's "Textbook of Medicine" and Dreisback's "Handbook of Poisons", and has been instrumental in making the Washington Poison Center a model program. Dr. Robertson, as Director of the WPC, takes a lead role in providing consultation on environmental exposures and seeing patients in the clinic based at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center.

Thomas G. Martin, MD, MPH

Thomas G. Martin is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Medical Director of the Washington Poison Center. Dr. Martin is the Director of the UW Medical Toxicology Service (UTOX) and the UW Medical Toxicology Consult Service (UW-TOX). In addition to board certification in medical toxicology and occupational medicine, he earned an MPH in Occupational and Environmental Health. He is an attending physician in the Emergency Department at UW Medical Centerand at the UW/Harborview Medical Center Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinic providing consultation and care for patients with chemical, biological, or other exposures. He also serves as the coordinator of the ACMT (American College of Medical Toxicology)/ATSDR (Agency for Toxics Substances and Disease Registry) consulting network.His toxicology and occupational and environmental medicine expertise make him ideally suited to provide diagnosis and treatment to children exposed to environmental toxins. He also oversees toxicology training of Emergency Medicine Residents from the joint Madigan Army Hospital - University of Washington ACGME-sanctioned training program.

Catherine Karr, MD, MS

Catherine Karr is a board certified pediatrician with a masters degree in environmental health. She is currently working on a PhD in Epidemiology. Her research involves a large study of the impact of ambient air pollution on infant bronchiolitis. She is an Acting Instructor with the University of Washington Department of Pediatrics and sees patients at the UW Pediatric Clinic. She serves as a consultant to PEHSU, where she responds to queries from health care providers, government officials and families regarding health risks associated with environmental exposures.

Matthew Keifer, MD, MPH

Matthew Keifer is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Environmental Health and Co-PI of the Pacific Northwest Agriculture Safety and Health Center (PNASH). He has extensive clinical and research experience in pesticide-related health effects. Given the importance of pesticide exposure in occupational and environmental settings he provides crucial expertise for the conduct of the UW-PEHSU. DR. Keifer is involved in providing consultation to the WPC physicians, MEDCON consultations, and teaching.

Tim Takaro, MD, MPH, MS

Tim Takaro is trained in Internal Medicine, Occupational Medicine, and holds a Masters Degree in Public Health and Toxicology. He has taken a leadership role in the University of Washington's investigations on the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford site. He is an expert in the effects of nuclear weapons production and now weapon site remediation on the worker, community, as well as regional ecology. He provides an invaluable resource to the center for questions arising with respect to children who are potentially exposed to toxins arising from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and other such sites.

Ruth Sechena, MD, MPH

Ruth Sechena is an internist trained in Occupational Medicine. She coordinates outreach for the University of Washington-NIEHS Center for Ecogenetics. She has extensive experience in bridging the needs of community members to access and appropriately interpreting scientific information with respect to environmental exposures. As such, she is an important link between the UW-PEHSU and the Center for Ecogenetics to address cutting-edge issues involving the environment and health effects.

Nancy Beaudet, MS, CIH

Nancy Beaudet is a certified industrial hygienist. She conducts patient related work site investigations, as well as communicates with consultants, regulators and others to ensure physicians have the best exposure information possible for patient care. She also provides leadership on research projects, including hazards in the fishing industry as well as on children's environmental health concerns. She has extensive experience conducting compliance inspections for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. Her ability to effectively integrate industrial hygiene concepts into the clinical, research and teaching missions of the program make her an important asset to the Pediatric Speciality Unit.

Lauren D. Yusem, MHA

Lauren D. Yusem is a Program Operations Manager in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program at the University of Washington. She has over five years of experience in health services administration and management. Her work experience includes project management in subacute and long-term care services, therapeutic and diagnostic services and cardiology leadership team management at Group Health Cooperative, Puget Sound. Ms. Yusem is responsible for the administrative management of PEHSU and for ensuring that a seamless set of services are coordinated for children and families in the region.
